If you are thinking about departing East Midlands Airport and taking your mobile phone on holiday then read the following unofficial information carefully. This unofficial information takes you through everything you need to know and do when travelling with your mobile phone and taking your mobile phone abroad.

Mobile Phones Abroad...

Before travelling with your mobile phone there are a few things you should know - like that you need to set your mobile phone up for International roaming and such like. So take a few moments to read this guide when taking your mobile phone on holiday.

The unofficial information is listed in helpful sections so you can get all the knowledge on taking your mobile phone abroad:

Preparing To Leave ...

When taking your mobile phone on holiday take note of the following steps you might need to consider to make your phone actually work, and at a price that's right for you:

  • Make sure you have checked with your Network provider that your phone is enabled for 'International roaming'. This does take up to 14 days for the service to be activated so do this well in advance of travel.

  • Ask your Network provider if the Country you are travelling to uses a different handset from here in the UK - in America for example it's a tri-band handset you'll need.

  • Do ask how much International roaming calls will cost you. They can be very expensive - especially if on a pay-as-you-go - so you might want to limit the amount of calls you actually make.

  • See if there are any deals offered by your Network provider that are available to the Country you are travelling to, or if there is an alternative tariff you can switch to before you travel.
Here are the Network provider's Customer Services Department telephone numbers:

  UK Network Providers
  O2 0870 225 7879
  Orange 0800 079 0006
T-Mobile 0845 412 5000
Three 08707 330 333
Virgin 0845 6000 789
Vodafone 08700 700 191
Tesco Mobile 0845 301 44 55

Mobile Phones Abroad - frequent use ...

It may be you can swap tariffs for whilst you are away that will give you cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee. If so, make sure you ask how long you will be tied into the contract for. Make sure the tariff is cost effective i.e. if you travel regularly a permanent tariff with International calls might be better for you.

Alternatively think about using an alternative International SIM card for the duration of your trip when travelling with your mobile phone.

These International SIM cards can be bought at International airports and some UK retailers (do make sure you check if there is an expiry date on the card) or you can buy a card below.

SIM for Travel offer International SIM cards for competitive rates - click this link:

And don't forget - you'll need to take an electrical adapter for your phone charger when taking your mobile phone abroad.

Arriving With Your Mobile Phone Abroad...

Once you've arrived with your mobile phone abroad simply turn it on as normal. You won't be required to do anything to make it work. Your phone then connects itself to the local transmitter allowing you to make and take calls.

The reason calls cost so much is because the phone, whilst connected to a local transmitter, routes all calls via the UK. For instance, if making a call in France, to a UK mobile also in France, the call will be routed a huge 1,800 miles so do look into the right tariff or SIM card for you.

Important Contact Numbers...

It's very important to include the following numbers in your mobile when taking your mobile phone on holiday:

  • Telephone number of your Hotel / Tour Operator

  • Telephone number of the nearest British Embassy to where you are going to be staying

  • Your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

Important Numbers - Government Offices and Agencies
  Foreign & Commonwealth Office Enquiries +44 (0) 207 008 1500
  Services for Briton’s overseas +44 (0) 207 008 0210
Travel Advice +44 (0) 845 850 2829

Overseas Mobile Phone Security ...

Before you travel make sure you have written down the following unofficial information, so if your mobile phone on holiday is lost or stolen you can report it to your Network provider and they can block the phone immediately:

The phone's security number/IMEI number and your own mobile phone number.

Also check with your Network provider to see if they will need any other unofficial information - like passwords - to block your phone.

Do bear in mind that most travel insurance policies don't as a rule include cover for mobile phones. For more unofficial information on travel insurance check out our Travel Insurance Page.
